The lack of integration between GE Healthcare products means that radiologists do not make the highest-quality diagnosis, the likelihood of errors from radiologists having to switch between applications is increased, and some of GE Healthcare products go unused, such as AW Server. Because HIS and RIS are not integrated with PACS and AW, radiologists are pulling information they need from sources within PACS which may be inaccurate or incomplete. When they switch between interfaces, the potential for error increases, and they may report on the wrong patient. Some radiologists would not use AW Server because it took too much time to load up and they did not feel that using AW Server gave them enough value.
Radiologists, technologists, and referring physicians communicate synchronously through informal channels. Their communication is not captured in the current system and is not supported in context.
Because software does not support many of the workflows of radiologists beyond reading a case, radiologists are forced to adopt more systems to handle these aspects of work. While most tools support reading cases, radiologists also take notes, dictate reports, and create worklists. Existing tools, such as linking and comparing images, need improvement.
Scheduling software lacks robustness and flexibility, which can result in patient care being slower and less efficient. Efficient worklist management is missing. Due to the significant memory footprint of the PACS and AW thin clients, the software becomes unresponsive when run on the hospitals’ dated hardware. GE Healthcare software does not resonate with radiologists, and some radiolgoists do not believe in the value of volumetric imaging. AW and PACS seem to be tolerable but sometimes interfere with the joy inherent in the work. Radiologists are divided over the value proposition of volumetric imaging.
Based on our user research, our design team determined that integration of GE Healthcare products was the most pressing and complicated issue. We saw the most value in designing a system that would unite two GE Healthcare products, PACS and AW Server. We had a vision for GE Healthcare to guide this design: GE Healthcare can make radiologists feel in control and confident by making the software seamless, transparent, and resonate with the radiologists.
